Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when the free market swallowed Poland, Warsaw is still a city of surprise and reinvention. The communism that for years has been actively repressing freedom of speech and creativity has had the opposite effect in Warsaw, which has always been a sizzling hub for both. And as the city's economy now flourishes, this has never been more true, with radical changes on the streets and a cutting-edge emerging design scene. Long story short - Poland’s design scene is definitely having a moment.

This is exactly why Warsaw has been an ideal context for our meetings with Element Talks' guests. A selection of top world designers under one roof? We had to push them for answers. What is the secret to being a successful designer? How can you achieve a work-life balance? Why is it important to talk about money openly? Should your work be political? Can love help you be a better designer?

COME WITH US FOR A SHORT TRIP DOWN THE MINDS OF SOME OF THE MOST INTERESTING DESIGNERS OF TODAY.

I've started to make art books because one professional told me: "Hey! It's too difficult for you. You can't do it." And I said: "What? I can't do it? I have to do it!" So I turned on Youtube and I've spent a few months watching tutorials, reading books.

ADRIAN SHAUGHNESSY
It’s a really interesting time for publishing books. We imagine the Internet and digital methods of publishing have taken over but, in fact, I think what happened is that the book, that funny slab of ink, glue an paper, has survived. It actually proved its value.

The role of type in design at the same time is very important and kind of a detail. You actually perceive a picture much quicker and much more efficiently than you do read text. So, in a sense, images are sort of superior to type. But, at the same time, if you don't have any type, any text, there is no language, so you cannot say anything specific.

I was by myself all the time. I decided to go to a dating website and was looking for someone who was also into design. And this guy named Wade sent me a message. We had our first date and after that we were never apart. We have been working professionally for the past year and a half now.

OLGA RAFALSKA & PAULA KACPRZAK

We were very curious about designers' work when we started our internships and our first works with clients. We knew how to design, more or less, but we didn't know how to negotiate with clients, how to sign a contract, build a team. So we decided to invite other designers and specialists to tell us how to do that.
