180 Media Academy is a program by Canal180 in collaboration with Porto/Post/Doc that brings together professionals from various creative fields with a common goal — to reflect on and rethink culture and media. How do we tell stories? How do media formats interact with the narratives we want to convey?


We invited creatives from various media sectors to share their vision on their practice, the industry they belong to, the world around them, and where we're headed next.


The aim of this program is also to offer a transdisciplinary and comprehensive perspective for the discussion of new themes, discourses, and trends that are shaping the world.


Here's how things rolled out this year:

On Monday, we streamed 3 online talks from our office:


Aiden Brady, volunteer at Dublin Digital Radio talked about .ddr’s fully democratic, member owned structure and its connection with independent arts, music and activism grassroots in Dublin.


Ben Derico, a video-journalist/producer currently working for the BBC presented his guide to documentary filmmaking, highlighting how to get from a topic to an authentic story, embracing uncertainty, and adapting to change—key skills for both filmmaking and journalism.


Paulo Martins, a creative director behind campaigns for some of the world’s biggest brands, reflected and shared ideas on how to navigate 
an unsettling future where technology evolves faster than ever.


On Tuesday, in partnership with Porto/Post/Doc, we screened two new editions of Freezing Frames and the Jogo Cruzado project, a partnership with Gnration and Culturgest.


The Freezing Frames episodes featured Alessandro Comodin, the featured director of Porto/Post/Doc 2023, and the directing duo Bêka & Lemoine, featured in the last edition of the Arquiteturas Film Festival. While Jogo Cruzado brought together Loreto Quijada and DJ Nigga Fox, followed by a collaboration between Claire Rousay and Toma Gerzha.

Diálogos entre o corpo e Media Art

On Wednesday, we gathered in our headquarters for two talks:


Edgar Pêra, one of the most important figures of Portuguese experimental cinema and audiovisual production, presented a few of his projects from his +40 year career, in conversation with film curator and critic Cátia Rodrigues.


Né Barros, founder of balleteatro, presented the process behind various collaborations, namely with artist João Martinho Moura, in the intersection between choreography and media art.

To close the programme, on Thursday, in partnership with Ordem dos Arquitetos we screened Habitar, a reflection on how we inhabit Porto. A documentary by Joaquín Mora, produced by us. The screening was followed up by a talk between architects Nuno Flores and Adriana Floret, and Nuno Silva, president of a resident's association in Porto.

Ben Derico is  journalist and documentarian based in San Francisco, he currently works as a Video Journalist & Producer with BBC News, focusing on stories at the intersection of Art and Technology. He has also produced content for CNN, The Washington Post, and Público, Portugal’s largest newspaper, among others.

Paulo Martins is a multidisciplinary Creative Director based in Amsterdam. He has experience helping some of the world’s favorite brands, including Nike, Adidas, LEGO + Pharrell Williams, Samsung, Rimowa, Aesop, Benetton, and the renowned Canal180 (original visual identity). His work has been globally recognized with over 100 awards, including a Cannes Lions Grand Prix (the first for a Portuguese creative).

Edgar Pêra is one of the most important figures of Portuguese experimental cinema and independent audiovisual productio. Edgar's prolific DIY approach stems from his days documenting the 80's rock scene, and has over the years amassed hundreds of audiovisual works.

Né Barros is a choreographer, dancer, and researcher at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Porto. She is a co-founder of balleteatro. Throughout her prolific career, Né Barros has also collaborated frequently with media artists, creating performance pieces which interact with digital realms.

Dublin Digital Radio (ddr.) is a volunteer-run, community radio station based in Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 2016, ddr. has focused on providing an outlet for alternative media across Ireland. During this talk, Aiden Brady, a ddr. volunteer will share insight into the station’s organisational structure and political values.

FAHR 021.3 is an internationally awarded creative and experimental studio, which operates in the expanded fields of art and architecture, incorporating artistic practices as a methodology in architectural scope.
