In this episode of Director ID, LA based filmmaker Alex Takács (Young Replicant) walks us through the ideas and instincts behind some of his most memorable music videos. His approach favors atmosphere over narrative, with a strong visual language shaped by memory, landscape, and the emotional charge of elements like water and fire.
Alex tolds us about how locations often drive his concepts, returning to the same site until something clicks. Along the way, he shares esoteric references that have informed certain videos, like Butoh dance and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. He told us about his work with Sam Dew, Leon Vynehall, alt-J, Flying Lotus, and The xx, each video a response to the music, built through constraint, intuition, and a strong sense of mood.
