Director ID profiles the best directors working in music videos today

Director ID profiles the best directors working in music videos today. In each episode, we invite directors to be a part of the process in a creative collaboration where the director has full control over how they choose to record their interview. The result is always different and unexpected. Each episode is an expression of individuality and the whole series a document of a generation of filmmakers in the digital age.

HOW IS THE PROCESS OF CREATING A DIRECTOR ID EPISODE?

Beatriz Gouveia animated this video during an internship at Canal180 early 2019

We make the questions, wait for their answers, receive the footage and edit it into a video, the rest is done by the directors we’re interviewing. Through 10-minute episodes, Director ID shows music video directors telling all about their process.

The 180ID series is Canal180’s flagship content, a series that looks into the work of creatives worldwide, offering a unique point of view of their process. In 2014, 180ID branched out into the Director ID series. Since then we made more than two handfuls of episodes with directors from all over the world.

In the first season, we have interviewed David Wilson, who has created work for artists such as Tame Impala, Metronomy, Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire. David Wilson’s episode gave us our first Vimeo Staff Pick. We also interviewed the filmmaker Hiro Murai, who directed music videos for Frank Ocean, Queens of the Stone Age, and recently Childish Gambino ‘This is America’. Besides from the music videos, Hiro Murai also directed the award winning series 'Atlanta' and 'Barry'. Kristoffer Borgli, the Norwegian director behind music videos for Todd Terje, Serena-Maneesh, Casiokids and Young Dreams. Alex Courtès, who made videos for much acclaimed artists like Air, The White Stripes, U2 and Justice. The Daniels, the now Oscar-winning duo that back then directed the virals 'Turn Down for What' by DJ Snake and Lil Jone, and 'My Machines' by Battles; and many other directors. Some of the oldest episodes of this series were released as part of a partnership with Chicago music publication Pitchfork.

A series built around a collaborative process.

The 2nd season of Director ID released in 2019 featured directors Oscar Hudson, Danny Cohen, Roger Guàrdia, Allie Avital, Yoonha Park, Ian Pons Jewell and Brook Linder.

In 2023 the 3rd season of Director ID is launched with Kasper Häggstrøm, Maxim Kelly, Claes Nordwall, Adam Willis, Jamie Whitby, Pennacky and Sabrina Nichols on board.
