Thoughts On Collectivism
A reflection on collective movement and how it can influence our choices

Thoughts on Collectivism is a film shot in Den Haag (NL) during TodaysArt.

We asked five different people from all over Europe to discuss new forms of collective movements and our challenges in the digital age.

During TodaysArt we spoke with Bogomir Doringer, Manuel Beltrán, Gauthier Roussilhe, Liisa Janssens and Daniel Erlacher and split up their thoughts into five topics: movement, rights, responsability, ethics and demands.

Our movement with Bogomir Doringer

How much of our dancing night moves are indicators of social and political impulses?

Bogomir-Doringer

Bogomir Doringer was curious about that and his research was transformed into “I Dance Alone”. The project consists of using bird-eye view to explore the dynamic of club’s dance floors. Bogomir recalls the 90’s when he would escape from bombings in Belgrade at Club Industria. Now he recognizes fear in his and other people’s behaviors.

WHAT CAN WE READ FROM COLLECTIVE MOVEMENT?

When you observe the crowd from a bird's-eye view, it seems like a bunch of bodies in a dance floor, but still there are individuals that do pop out. (...) Can we somehow say that these dynamics are the mirror of the social political environments?

- Bogomir Doringer

Our rights with Manuel Beltrán

Everytime we interact online, someone is profiting from that and Manuel Beltrán evokes the users' urge to fight for their democratic rights.

WHY DO WE NEED A UNION OF DATA USERS?

Manuel Betrán believes in an union of data users to achieve a healthy democracy. How to balance our free use of internet with the profit major organizations take out from it? Internet is a place of freedom, but it also puts our rights in a delicate position.

Manuel-Beltrán

Every time that we produce an interaction online, every time that we open our Facebook and we scroll down, we are producing capital. (...) In this industry of big data we need to find forms of collective political organizations to try to fight for our rights.

- Manuel Beltrán

WHAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF DESIGN?

Our responsibility with Gauthier Roussilhe

Economical interests often compromise design. For Gauthier Roussilhe, considering complexity is the key.

Gauthier-Rousilhe

Because of economical interest, sometimes the responsibility of design is disregarded. Designer and writer Gauthier Roussilhe believes that design and politics should never be apart. Designers have to abandon their workplaces and start meeting people - the most complex things around.

The only way design can evolve as a sane discipline is to start to mediating complexity.

- Gauthier Roussilhe

WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD WE ASK REGARDING ETHICS?

Our ethics with Liisa Janssens

The researcher Liisa Janssens says that algorithm innovations don't necessarily bear in mind ethics.

Liisa is responsible for assuring ethics are taken into consideration in the field of technological innovation. A product has to be ready for a market both in a commercial and social level. Our human and democratic values must be implicit in the context of algorithm dynamics.

Liisa-Janssens

Ethics, by itself, is very easy to mystify.

- Liisa Janssens

Our Demands with Daniel Erlacher

Daniel-Erlacher

Daniel Erlacher, founder of Elevate Festival, knows exactly what.

We’re in a very perverse dystopian situation where we share our networks and communication with a multitude of companies that extract profit from our networks and communication.

- Daniel Erlacher

According to Daniel Erlacher, we should be able to:

#1 Export our data from online platforms

#2 Own the right of online privacy

#3 Have the right to disappear forever
#4 Public institutions should use open source software
#5 Corporations need to facilitate open networks

Thoughts on Collectivism reflects on our social-political rights, demands and behaviors, as users of digital platforms and services. Ethical questions arise when we are both the products and the producers of that.
