Thoughts on the next decade
A time capsule for the collective memory

As the end of the year approaches, we look back to a year exploring questions around the collective and also into the future. Seeing 2020 as a turning point, of a year and a decade, we are reflecting on different topics in arts and society and looking to the themes and questions that will define them in the next ten years.- How will the next decade be?

thoughts-on-the-next-decade

For Thoughts On The Next Decade, we invited 10 artists and thinkers from our network to answer some critical questions and present their predictions on what the next decade will look like from their perspectives. Every episode of this series tries to emulate the idea of a time capsule, in which every artist or thinker invited starts the video with the date it was recorded.

At the end, a group of people from different points of the globe and with a connection to Canal180, transports a collection of thoughts to the collective memory. The final result is a series that gathers thoughts on music, culture, activism, festivals, photography, online platforms, architecture, technology and spirituality, and how these will evolve in the next 10 years. A time capsule full of Thoughts On The Next Decade.

PART 9: WILL IT BE MORE DIFFICULT TO HAVE CINEMA THAT IS MORE PLURAL IN THE COMING DECADE?

WITH ALLIE AVITAL

Will cinema become less important or will it reconquer a space in the collective conscience? To answer our questions around film and cinema, we invited Allie Avital, a New York based film director whom we featured on this year’s season of Director ID. In the ninth part of Thoughts on the Next Decade, Allie Avital tells us about the importance of film in the next decade.

Thoughts on the next decade

Born and raised in New York, Alie Avital has directed videos for School of Seven Bells, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Mutual Benefit, Moses Sumney and Autre Ne Veut amongst others. She draws influence from her artistic upbringing - her father was a opera set designer and she grew up studying arts, later evolving into filmmaking through visual arts and performance directing. Her first narrative short ‘Naked Woman’ was selected for the seventh edition of Venice Biennale Cinema College.

On one hand it is so exciting that young filmmakers have so much access to materials and all of that,. On the other hand, we’ve definitely hit a kind of peak of what kind of very narrow type of film is making it into movie theatres.

PART 8: SHOULD LONG FORMAT BE ADOPTED AS THE WAY TO CONTEXTUALIZE ARTISTIC WORK IN THE NEXT DECADE?

WITH ELIA EINHORN

Are long formats the way to contextualize artistic work in the next decade? To answer our questions on that topic, we invited Elia Einhorn, the host and producer of both the Talkhouse Podcast and Pitchfork Radio, whom we met when we interviewed him for our video of Chicago Midwinter earlier this year. In the eight part of Thoughts on the Next Decade, Elia Einhorn tells us about the importance of conversation.

Elia Einhorn is the host and producer of the Talkhouse Podcast and Pitchfork Radio. Elia also throws the Brooklyn-based DJ nights “This Is Britain!” and "Indiepop Student Disco". He was the frontman of the critically acclaimed indie-punk band The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir (Bloodshot Records) and is the songwriter / producer for the new collaborations-based project Fashion Brigade.

It’s going to be about different voices speaking to their own communities and those communities can be defined in a myriad different ways.

PART 7: HOW WILL EUROPEAN IDENTITY BE RESHAPED THROUGH MEDIA IN THE NEXT DECADE?

WITH MARIJE MARTENS

How will the European narratives evolve in the next decade? And what is media’s role in reshaping them, or fostering conversations about them? To answer our questions, we invited Marije Martens, the co-founder and editor of Are We Europe, a platform that provides an alternative perspective on Europe. In the seventh part of Thoughts on the Next Decade, Marije Martens tells us about how a mediated, responsible and collaborative media can foster conversations on the kind of Europe that we want to create.

Thoughts on the next decade

Marije Martens is co-founder and editor of Are We Europe - a collective of European journalists and content creators. On their platform, Are We Europe report on the often neglected and ever-changing state of the European identity by empowering aspiring European journalists who are exploring the topic.

For a properly functioning European democracy which, rightly so, isn’t always seen as such, we need to create a media that actually makes people understand what are the different futures of Europe we can choose and that we can discuss

Marije Martens

PART 6: HOW CAN WE KEEP THINGS INTERESTING IN THE COMING DECADE?

WITH JOHANN WALD

How will music evolve in the upcoming decade? What kind of movements are likely to emerge? To answer our questions about music for the next decade, we invited Johann Wald, a DJ, actor and Spanish TV presenter who currently produces and hosts an array of shows on Radio Primavera Sound. In the sixth part of Thoughts on the Next Decade, Johann Wald tells us about how he thinks we can keep music interesting in the next decade.

Johann Wald has been selecting music for more than 15 years as a VJ for MTV as well as numerous TV and radio channels. He is a DJ, actor and Spanish TV presenter, who currently produces and hosts an array of shows on Radio Primavera Sound, a recognised new radio channel concept.

Johann-Wald

I hope younger generations start getting excited and ambitious about picking up instruments, again.

Johann Wald

PART 5: HOW CAN WE STAY OPEN TO NEW REALITIES IN THE NEXT DECADE?

WITH VINCENT MOON

Society is full of information and along with it comes a sort of arrogance that makes us think that we can find and know everything. And this made us reflect. How can we stay open to new realities in the next decade and go looking for them, stepping out of our own intellectual bubbles? In the fifth part of Thoughts On The Next Decade, Vincent Moon, a French independent filmmaker, presents his thoughts on rituals and spirituality in the digital age.

Vincent-Moon

Born in Paris, Vincent Moon (real name Mathieu Saura) is an independent filmmaker who travels the world with his camera, documenting music-related experiences, from rock concerts to rare shamanic rituals, experimentations in electronics or a cappella village songs. We met Vincent in 2014 and highlighted his work in an episode of 180ID.

The digital age is spiritual reawakening but it’s taking us a very long time to see it coming.

PART 4: WHAT TRANSFORMATIONS WILL HAPPEN IN PUBLIC SPACE AND THE WAY WE INHABIT CITIES?

WITH VERE VAN GOOL

To answer our questions regarding the role of architecture in dismantling social hierarchy in the coming decade, we invited Vere Van Gool, a curator and writer based in New York. For the fourth episode of Thoughts On the Next Decade, we invited Vere Van Gool to talk about the future of the spaces we live in.

Vere van Gool is a curator and writer based in New York. Currently, she works as Associate Director and Curator at the New Museum’s IdeasCity - a residency and forum that explores the role of art and culture beyond the walls of the museum. She is also a lecturer, currently at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Her work has been featured in Architectural Review, ArtNet, Crash Magazine, Document Journal, I-D Magazine, and New York Times.

Vere-van-Gool

What we should do is look at nature, learn from nature to discover natural design and cohabitation processes that use natural materials and climate systems to create sustainable places and sights and agencies for people to live together.

- Vere Van Gool

PART 3: HOW WILL PHOTOGRAPHY EVOLVE IN THE NEXT DECADE?

WITH TANIA FRANCO KLEIN

To present predictions on the evolution of photography in the next decade we invited Tania Franco Klein, a Mexican photographer whose work evokes a nostalgia for a paradise lost, highly influenced by her fascination with trying to understand the psychology of our contemporary society. In this episode, she presents her predictions on the evolution of photography in a saturated world of images.

Tania-Franco-Klein

Tania Franco Klein’s work is highly influenced by her fascination with social behavior and contemporary practices such as leisure, consumption, media overstimulation, emotional disconnection, the obsession with eternal youth, the American dream in the Western world and the impact those have in our everyday life. Her work has been exhibited across Europe, USA, and has been featured by international publications including Aperture Foundation, The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, Paris Review, Vogue Italia and The New Yorker.

I hope we can create less but with more meaning and being more conscious about “are we taking something or doing something?”. The economisation of the image in a way.

Tania Franco Klein

PART 2: IN THIS OVERLY SATURATED ONLINE WORLD, WHAT IS THE VALUE OF OUR ATTENTION?

WITH LUCY BLACK-SWAN

Lucy Black-Swan is the co-founder of Internet Age Media, a group of ventures exploring the implications of digital technologies in the futures of the Planet, and so, we thought she was the best person to ask our questions around the future of our relationships with the internet.

In the second episode of Thoughts on the Next Decade, she tells us about becoming mindful of the place of internet platforms in our world and lives and shifting to long-term thinking, both when it comes to taking care of our minds and the planet.

Lucy co-founded Internet Age Media (IAM) with Andrés Colmenares. IAM develops unconventional research, curatorial & commissioning projects through creative partnerships with cultural institutions. They also run a number of experimental initiatives, including the IAM Weekend, an event about the futures of internet in Barcelona, where we filmed Thoughts on the Future(s) of the Internet earlier this year.

Lucy-Black-Swan

We can’t normalise the omnipresence of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Google in our lives. It’s important that we become more aware of the value of our attention.

- Lucy Black-Swan

PART 1: HOW WILL ACTIVISM AND THE POLITICAL SOCIETY EVOLVE IN THE COMING DECADE?

WITH DANIEL ERLACHER

To answer our questions surrounding how activism and the political society will evolve in the next decade, we invited Daniel Erlacher, whom we had previously met when we interviewed him for Thoughts on Collectivism. In this first episode of Thoughts on The Next Decade, he speaks about the role technology and the younger generation of activists, rising in the light of the climate crisis debate, will play in changing how we protest.

Daniel-Erlacher

Daniel Erlacher is the co-founder of The Elevate Festival in Graz, Austria, which is one of the We Are Europe festivals that combines music, art, and political topics. He coordinates the discourse part of the documentary film festival and the Elevate Media channel live stream. You can find him regularly communicating on topics like public & social media, decentralised communication, data protection, geopolitics, and human rights.

In the next ten years, I think activists will have to learn that they cannot rely on systems like Facebook or other centrally controlled systems. (...) We have now a generation that are called ‘digital natives’, but are they really ‘digital natives’ or are they born into a world of Google and Apple on their devices and no alternatives?

- Daniel Erlacher
